The dates, the sourcing behind them, and the four real options — including the ones we don’t sell.
If your firm runs Dragon Legal Anywhere or Dragon Professional Anywhere, here is something worth knowing: the product is being retired, and depending on who your reseller is, you may not have been told.
We went looking for the official announcement. As of July 31, 2026, we could not find one published by Microsoft or Nuance.
What we found instead were multiple Nuance-certified partners telling their own customers the same thing, in the same terms, with the same dates. That is not nothing — these are companies contractually close to the vendor, and they are not in the habit of announcing the death of products they sell. But it is not a press release either.
The short answer
No new licences sold. Existing contracts may be renewed one final time during 2026.
No security updates, no bug fixes, no support. The software may still run — it will not be maintained.
Does it affect anything else?
Yes. This is a family retirement, not a single product. Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Anywhere Mobile are named alongside Dragon Legal Anywhere.
Is Dragon dead?
No — and this is the part almost everyone gets wrong. See the distinction that actually matters, below.
Do you have to do anything today?
No. You have roughly five months to make a purchasing decision that carries a price consequence, and roughly seventeen months before the software stops being maintained. Those are two different deadlines and they matter for different reasons.
What is actually confirmed, and by whom
Thax Software, a certified Nuance partner, published the end-of-sale and end-of-life dates on June 26, 2026, attributing the decision to “Microsoft and Nuance,” and stating that existing contracts can be renewed one final time in 2026 with licences expiring by the end of 2027.
A second Nuance-channel partner published materially the same guidance for professional and legal practices.
A competing vendor, in a North American partner briefing on July 29, 2026, told its channel there is “a lot of uncertainty with the end of sale coming up this year and end of life next year” for these products — and listed “what happens with my product as it is end of sales?” as one of three questions it is building customer messaging around.
That is three organisations — two of them Nuance’s own partners, one a direct competitor — describing the same retirement on the same timeline.
No product advisory notice on Nuance’s support portal announcing Dragon Legal Anywhere or Dragon Professional Anywhere end of life. No Microsoft announcement. No public page from either vendor stating these dates.
The most recent client release we can identify is version 2025.1. The products are still being downloaded and installed today.
Our read: a vendor retiring a product usually notifies the channel before it notifies the market, and the channel is clearly talking. We believe the dates are real. We are telling you they are sourced to partners rather than to the vendor, because if you are going to make a budget decision on this, you should know how firm the ground is.
If Microsoft or Nuance publishes something official, we will update this page and say so.
End of sale vs. end of life — they are not the same thing
End of sale (Dec 31, 2026) — the commercial door closes. No new licences. Existing agreements get one final renewal during 2026. Nothing on your desks stops working. This is a purchasing deadline, not a technical one.
End of life (Dec 31, 2027) — the maintenance door closes. No security patches, no bug fixes, no support line. The software will very likely keep running after this date. That is precisely what makes it dangerous.
For a law firm, the end-of-life date is the one that carries professional-responsibility weight. Unpatched software that handles privileged client communications and matter files is a different category of problem than unpatched software that handles your lunch order. Your malpractice carrier, your clients’ outside-counsel guidelines, and — depending on your jurisdiction — your bar’s technology-competence expectations may all have opinions about running unmaintained software against client data.
The 2027 date is not when the software stops working. It is when continuing to use it becomes a decision you are accountable for.
The distinction that actually matters
Dragon is not being discontinued. The cloud versions are.

This distinction is the entire decision, and it is why “just move to Dragon Legal 16” is worse advice than it sounds.
Your firm chose a cloud product. That was not an accident. You chose it because it works from home and from court, because it does not pin a lawyer to one machine, because IT does not hand-maintain profiles on twelve desktops, and because the recognition model improves without anyone installing anything.
Moving to a desktop perpetual licence solves the end-of-life problem by reversing the architectural decision you deliberately made. For some firms that is genuinely the right answer — a single office, machines that never move, and a strong preference for owning software outright. For most firms that adopted cloud dictation in the last five years, it is a step backwards being sold as a rescue.
Be clear-eyed about which one you are.
Your real options
1. Do nothing until 2027
Cost: none today. Risk: you lose the final renewal window at the end of 2026, then run unmaintained software against privileged data. Reasonable if you are already changing practice management platforms in 2027 and want one migration, not two.
2. Final renewal in 2026, then decide
Cost: one more term at current pricing. Benefit: buys you until the end of 2027 with support intact. Reasonable if you need budget-cycle room. The lowest-regret option for most firms — and it expires with the calendar year.
3. Move to desktop perpetual
Cost: per-seat licence plus desktop deployment and profile management. Benefit: you own it. Cost you feel later: the mobility and zero-maintenance you originally bought. Verify current availability first — desktop Dragon has its own retirement history.
4. A modern cloud legal platform
Cost: subscription, comparable to today. Benefit: you keep the cloud architecture you chose, and the current generation does more than transcribe — the better ones draft the document from the dictation rather than handing you text to format.
What this costs you if you wait
The end-of-sale date is a pricing deadline as much as a technical one. Whatever you migrate to, vendors in this category are running introductory pricing through 2026 to capture exactly the population you are in. Introductory pricing has a way of not surviving contact with January.
More concretely: the final renewal is only available during 2026. Let that pass and you have removed your own safety net — you are then choosing between an unmaintained product and a rushed migration, without the option to buy yourself a year.
What we don’t know yet
- Whether Microsoft or Nuance will publish an official notice, and whether the dates shift when they do.
- What happens to Dragon Anywhere Mobile users specifically. It is named in the retirement but has had the least channel commentary.
- Whether desktop Dragon Legal 16 and Professional 16 have their own retirement timeline. They are reported to continue. “Reported to continue” is not a commitment, and desktop Dragon has been retired before.
- What migration assistance, if any, exists for current customers. We have seen none announced.

Frequently asked questions
Every source we can find says yes. Two Nuance-certified channel partners and one competing vendor have all stated that Dragon Legal Anywhere, Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Anywhere Mobile reach end of sale on December 31, 2026 and end of life on December 31, 2027. As of July 31, 2026 we could find no announcement published by Microsoft or Nuance confirming this, which is why we disclose the sourcing rather than state the dates as vendor-confirmed.
Reported end of life is December 31, 2027. After that date there are no security updates, no bug fixes and no support. End of sale is a year earlier, on December 31, 2026, after which no new licences can be purchased and the final renewal window closes.
Channel partners report that existing agreements can be renewed one final time during 2026, with those renewals running through to end of life at the end of 2027. That is the most actionable detail in this retirement: it lets a firm buy itself a supported year while it evaluates replacements properly. Check your own renewal date, because if it falls in early 2027 you may need to act inside 2026 to capture it at all.
Current reporting says no. The retirement covers the cloud subscription products — Dragon Legal Anywhere, Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Anywhere Mobile. The desktop perpetual products, Dragon Legal 16 and Dragon Professional 16, are reported to continue. That said, desktop Dragon has its own retirement history, so we would want a straight answer about its roadmap before recommending it as a destination.
There are four realistic directions: do nothing until 2027, take the final 2026 renewal and decide later, move to a desktop perpetual Dragon licence, or move to a modern cloud legal documentation platform. Which is right depends on whether your attorneys dictate because it is faster than typing, or because someone downstream turns that dictation into a finished document. Those are different problems with very different price tags.
