The two dates

End of sale
December 31, 2026

No new licences. Final renewal window closes.

End of life & support
December 31, 2027

No security updates, no bug fixes, no support.

Everything else on this page is what those two lines actually mean when you are the one holding the licence.

Sourcing, up front

As of July 31, 2026, we have found no announcement of these dates published by Microsoft or Nuance. They come from Nuance-certified channel partners and from a competitor’s partner briefing. We think they are accurate. We are telling you where they came from because you may be budgeting against them.

December 31, 2026 — end of sale

What ends: the ability to buy.

No new Dragon Legal Anywhere licences. No new Dragon Professional Anywhere licences. No adding seats to an existing agreement after this date.

What does not end: anything you already own. Your users keep working on January 1, 2027 exactly as they did on December 31.

The renewal detail that matters most

Channel partners report that existing contracts can be renewed one final time during 2026, and that those renewals run through to end of life.

That single sentence is the most consequential thing on this page, because it means you have one remaining chance to buy yourself time, and it expires with the calendar year.

Miss it and your choices narrow to two: run unsupported software through 2027 and beyond, or execute a migration on someone else’s schedule. Take it and you have a fully supported product through 2027 while you evaluate properly.

If you do nothing else this year, find out when your agreement renews and whether you can extend it inside 2026. That is a fifteen-minute conversation with whoever holds your contract.

Why end of sale isn’t the crisis it sounds like

Vendors retire products constantly. End of sale is a commercial event — it closes a revenue line that is being replaced or wound down. It is not a statement about the software suddenly being unsafe.

Firms that treat end of sale as a fire drill tend to migrate badly: rushed evaluation, wrong product, no change management, unhappy attorneys. The date to organise around is the second one.

December 31, 2027 — end of life

What ends: maintenance.

No security patches. No bug fixes. No support line. No compatibility updates when Windows, macOS, or your practice management platform ships a change that breaks something.

What does not end — and this is the trap: the software very probably keeps running.

That is precisely what makes this date different in character from the first one. Nothing forces your hand. There is no shutoff, no licence server going dark that we are aware of, no dramatic Monday morning. The product simply stops being maintained while continuing to sit on your attorneys’ desktops handling privileged material.

Why this date carries weight it wouldn’t in another industry

If unmaintained software ran your office coffee order, this would be a footnote. Dragon Legal Anywhere handles dictated client communications, matter files, and work product — the category of material your firm has affirmative duties to protect.

Three parties may take an interest, and it is worth knowing which ones apply to you before 2028 rather than after:

🛡️

Your malpractice carrier

Some policies contain conditions about maintaining reasonable security practices. Unpatched software handling client confidences is the kind of thing that becomes interesting after an incident, not before.

💼

Your clients

Outside-counsel guidelines from corporate clients increasingly specify security requirements, and some name unsupported software directly. If you have institutional clients, someone has probably already sent you a questionnaire.

⚖️

Your bar

Most US jurisdictions have adopted some version of the technology-competence expectation. How far that extends to end-of-life software is not settled, and we are not the people to tell you where your jurisdiction lands. It is a question worth putting to someone who is.

December 31, 2027 is not the day the software stops working. It is the day continuing to use it becomes a decision you are accountable for, rather than a default you inherited.

What this means for planning

Working backwards from the dates.
Window What it’s for
Now → Dec 2026 Find your renewal date. Decide whether to take the final renewal. Evaluate replacements without time pressure.
Jan → Dec 2027 If you renewed: run supported while you migrate deliberately. If you didn’t: you are migrating now, on a deadline.
Jan 2028 onward Anything still on these products is unsupported software handling client data.

Most firms should be making a decision in the next four months, not a migration. Those are different things, and conflating them is how firms end up buying the wrong replacement in a hurry.

What we don’t know about these dates

Plainly, because a page about dates that hides its uncertainty is worse than useless.
  • Whether Microsoft or Nuance will publish official confirmation, and whether the dates move when they do. If they shift, they are more likely to extend than compress — but that is a judgement, not a fact.
  • Whether the final-renewal window is uniform. Contract terms vary by region, reseller, and agreement type. Yours may differ.
  • What happens at the licence level after December 2027. Every indication is that the software continues to function. We have seen nothing stating that as policy.
  • Whether there is a migration programme for existing customers. None has been announced that we can find.

This page is dated. We will update it when any of that resolves.
